GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team fired a 2-over par 290 in round one of the 2013 Bridgestone Golf Collegiate Saturday afternoon to sit in second place overall just two strokes back at the Grandover Resort East Course. The tournament will conclude Sunday with 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The event was shortened to a 36-hole event after frost delayed the start of play Saturday. The Spartans posted a 290 to sit just two back of North Carolina, which carded a 288 even-par Saturday. The field at the 2013 Bridgestone Golf Collegiate features 10 teams ranked in the top 100 in the nation, including the Spartans at No. 64. Chattanooga and Virginia Tech are tied for third overall with a 3-over par 291 while North Carolina State is fifth at 4-over par 292.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) continued his dominant play as he is also in second place after posting a 3-under par 69 in round one. Jenkins is just one-shot back of the lead held by Henry Do of North Carolina at 4-under par 68. The two will be paired together in the foursome that will start on hole No. 1 Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. Jenkins posted six birdies on the afternoon to go along with two bogeys on the East Course.
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) and sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) are tied for 11th overall with a 1-over par 73. Dixon was 1-under through 12 holes while Coalson birdied No. 17 to reach 1-over par down the stretch.
Freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) rounded out the Spartans top four scores as he is tied for 36th with a 3-over par 75. McGlone rallied for two birdies in his final four holes, picking up strokes on No. 18 and No. 2 to post the 75. Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) rounded out the lineup with 4-over par 76.
Junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and redshirt freshman Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) played as individuals Saturday and posted scores of 6-over 78.
