GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team wraps up the home portion of the regular season Saturday night as the Spartans host Southern Conference foe Georgia Southern in the 2013 Homecoming game. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium and will mark the culmination of Homecoming Week on the UNCG campus.
This year’s Homecoming Court will be announced at halftime and a post-game fireworks show will follow the game. Additionally, the first 400 fans will receive a Bojangles Gift Card. Admission is FREE!
Prior to the game, the Spartans will honor four senior members of the 2013 team with senior day festivities for midfielder Preston Ford (Jamestown, N.C./High Point Christian), forward Brian Graham (Bowie, Md./Bowie), midfielder Oddur Gudmundsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) and defender Mahdi Ali (Helsinki, Finland/Vuosaaren Lukio).
The Spartans enter the game with a 7-6-2 overall record and a 2-1-1 mark in SoCon play. UNCG sits alone in third place with seven points in the standings, trailing only Wofford (12 points) and Furman (8 points). The top team in the standings at the end of the year receives a first round bye while teams ranked second through fourth will host a first round game in the SoCon Tournament.
UNCG had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped last weekend with a loss at Wofford. Junior David Reittinger (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) leads the team in scoring with 11 points as he has scored a team-high four goals and dished out three assists. Graham is second on the team in scoring with eighth points as he has dished out a team-high four assists while finding the back of the net twice.
Ali and redshirt sophomore forward Dustin Gamradt (Kiel, Germany/Hebbleschule) are tied for second on the team with three goals apiece. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) has a 1.39 goals against average with six shutouts on the year.
Georgia Southern enters the game with a 6-8-0 overall record and a 1-3-0 mark in SoCon play. The Eagles have won back-to-back games with victories over Jacksonville and Appalachian State. Georgia Southern has dropped league games against Davidson, Wofford and Elon.
Witt Carlisle leads the team in scoring with 11 points as he has scored four goals and dished out three assists. Hunter Norton is second on the team in scoring at 10 points with a team-high four assists and three goals. Neal Bates has played every minute in goal for the Eagles and has a 1.27 goals against average with three shutouts.
Saturday’s game marks the 25th meeting all-time between UNCG and Georgia Southern. The Spartans hold a commanding 18-3-3 advantage in the all-time series. Last season, Georgia Southern picked up two victories over UNCG at home. The Eagles won 4-1 during the regular season before ending the Spartans’ season with a 2-1 double overtime victory in the first round of the SoCon Tournament. Prior to last season, UNCG had won three straight games in the series, outscoring Georgia Southern 17-1 in the process.
