GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf program hosts the prestigious Bridgestone Golf Collegiate this weekend at the Grandover Resort with 36 holes played Saturday and 18 holes played Sunday on the East Course. Saturday will have a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start, which was pushed back an hour due to a freeze warning, while Sunday is still slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The 14-team field at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate is one of the toughest events this fall with 12 teams ranked in the top 100 by Golf Stat, including eight in the top 75. Joining No. 64 UNCG in the field is No. 10 Virginia Tech, No. 30 Iowa State, No. 31 Purdue, No. 33 Memphis, No. 54 Georgia State, No. 58 Mississippi State, No. 66 North Carolina, No. 75 VCU, No. 76 Washington State, No. 79 N.C. State, No. 84 Chattanooga, William & Mary and High Point.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) leads the Spartans into the weekend as he owns a 71.33 stroke average through his first 12 rounds of his career. Jenkins has posted three top 10 finishes in four events this year, including a victory at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. Last time out, he posted an eighth place finish at the AutoTrader.com event with a 5-under par 211.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) recorded a seventh-place finish at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate with a 2-under par 214. Coalson owns a 73.67 stroke average this season and has tallied a career-low round of 5-under par 67.
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) is second on the team with a 73.33 stroke average this season. Dixon has recorded two top 20 performances, placing 19th at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and 13th at the VCU Shootout. Last year, he placed 35th at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) and freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) round out the Spartans’ lineup. Haithcock owns a 73.50 stroke average this year and has posted a 75 score or lower in nine of his 12 rounds. McGlone has a 74.68 stroke average and turned in a top 10 finish at the VCU Shootout with a 1-under par 215.
Junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and redshirt freshman Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) will play as individuals this weekend. Ehlert posted a 19th place finish last year at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate, the highest finish for a Spartan in the event.
Last year, Mississippi State won the event recording a 3-under par 861 (286-286-289) to win by four strokes over Chattanooga 1-over par 865 (289-282-294). Chattanooga's Chris Robb won the individual title posting a 9-under score of 207 (72-66-69) after 54 holes to defeat Mississippi State's Axel Boasson by one stroke at 8-under par 208 (69-67-72).
