GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team will help the campus celebrate Homecoming this weekend, welcoming Wofford and Furman to Fleming Gymnasium for a pair of key Southern Conference matches. The Spartans and Terriers will match up Friday at 6 p.m. before the Blue and Gold takes on the co-league leader Paladins Saturday – also at 6 p.m.
Before Saturday's match, the team will present the Cone Health Mammography Scholarship Fund a check for $1,148.47. The money was raised two weeks ago during UNCG's Fight Like a Spartan celebration.
This weekend should provide a bit of separation in the SoCon standings as Furman sports a 7-1 league mark while UNCG and Wofford are currently in a three-way tie for fifth place with Elon at 4-4. The top eight teams will qualify for the Southern Conference tournament in late November.
The Spartans are coming off a road split last weekend in which they downed Chattanooga in five sets and suffered a sweep at Samford. Senior outside hitter Karrian Chambers reached a significant career milestone against the Mocs as she became the ninth player in program history to record 1,000 kills. Classmate and middle hitter Olivia Humphries (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) recorded a team-best eight kills against the Bulldogs Saturday and sits just two kills shy of the 1,000 mark.
Humphries leads the offensive charge for UNCG this season with 243 kills (3.08 per set). She is ninth in the league in kills per set and is hitting .226. Defensively, Santiago ranks first for UNCG and fifth in the SoCon with 4.52 digs per set (357 total). As a team, the Blue and Gold is out-hitting its opponents .229-.180 and is averaging 13.09 kills and 16.05 digs per set. In league matches only, the Spartans rank in the top three in hitting percentage, opponent hitting percentage and digs.
Wofford (9-13 overall) comes into the weekend a confident side, having won four of its last five matches. The Terriers knocked off Davidson in four sets at home Saturday in their most recent contest. Taylor Baird and Amanda Liguori pace the Wofford offense with 276 and 270 kills respectively while Jessica Graham leads the defensive efforts with 388 digs (4.56 per set). The Terriers are hitting .198 as a team while averaging 12.28 kills and 13.95 digs per set.
After a tough start to the season, Furman (11-8 overall) has won 11 of its last 14 matches. The Paladins are playing a solid brand of volleyball, having swept Wofford and Davidson at home last weekend. Christina Dorismund tops the squad in kills with 224 and hitting a stout .355. Defensively, Elle Ross boasts 347 digs (4.82 per set) while last year’s Southern Conference Freshman of the Year Jo Wilks is dishing out 10.44 assists per set.
UNCG leads the all-time series with Wofford 18-9 while Furman has captured 22 of the 33 meetings with the Spartans.
The Blue and Gold remains at home next weekend, hosting Appalachian State and Western Carolina for a pair of league contests.
