CARY, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team completed a strong day 2 at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships Friday at the Cary Tennis Center.
Sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) continues his hot streak advancing into the round of 16 with a tough three set victory against NC State’s Beck Bond, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Mack will look to advance to the quarterfinals Saturday against another member of NC State’s team in No. 15 seed Robbie Mudge at 9 a.m.
In doubles action, junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) and sophomore James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) advanced to the third round after defeating Wake Forest’s Max Kan and Aws Laaribi, 8-6. The duo will next face No. 12 seed Oystein Steiro and Nelson Vick from North Carolina Saturday at 3 p.m.
Senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankara, Turkey/METU Development Foundation) and Mack fell to Campbell’s Fernando Guillen and Marthinus Visser, 8-4.
Sophomores Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) and Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) lost to Central’s William East and Daniil Gerasimov, 8-6.
In consolation singles, Smith earned a straight sets victory against Appalachian State’s Zack Bost, 6-1, 6-4.
