GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team heads back on the road to face Davidson Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Alumni Soccer Stadium. The Spartans finish the trip against Georgia Southern Sunday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga.
“We have been on the road a lot but we think this is a perfect weekend for us to get some points back,” head coach Steve Nugent said. “We have talked a lot this week about this time of year being mentally and physically strong. The one encouraging thing is that we our creating a lot of chances but we need to finish them.”
UNCG is currently 7-5-2, 2-1-2 in the SoCon after picking up its second tie in Southern Conference play against Wofford last weekend. The Spartans lead the all-time series against Davidson with a 22-5-1 record, including three-straight wins.
Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) leads the team with five goals for 10 points and has taken 40 shots. Freshman Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda's Collegiate) is second on the team with three goals and two assists. Junior Ashley Stokes (Cary, N.C./Green Hope) is third with two goals and sophomore Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tennessee/Father Ryan) has a goal with two assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) leads UNCG in net with six shutouts, 71 saves and 0.88 goals against average in 14 games.
Davidson (5-7-3, 3-2 SoCon) went 2-0 last weekend, with a 3-0 home win versus The Citadel and then finished with a 4-3 triumph at Francis Marion Sunday. Stephanie Piperno scored a pair of goals and picked up an assist Thursday night against The Citadel. Piperno is second with six points (2 goals, 2 assists). Becca Fisher leads the team with 40 shots ... Rachel Locke picked up her fourth win of the year and pushed her save total to 69. She is fourth in the SoCon in saves, while in a two-way tie in shutouts with four. The program, which was started in 1989, is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Elon (8-2-4) is coming off a 1-0-1 weekend after defeating Furman 4-3 last Sunday, while tying Wofford 1-1 Friday. The Phoenix are second in the league in goals (38), assists (32) and shots (227). Nicole Dennion leads the team with 22 points (9 goals, 4 assists) and is second in the league. Goalkeeper Kate Murphy has started all 14 games, sporting a 0.95 goals against average and 37 saves sporting a 7-0-4 mark in goal.
