The Spartans are coming off their best showing of the year as they placed second overall at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate last week at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh with a 10-under par 854. The 854 score is the third lowest 54-hole team total in program history. The Spartans opened the tournament with a program-record 276 in round one before posting a 278 in round two, which was good for the fourth-lowest round in program history.
Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) leads the Spartans and will be looking to post his second straight victory as he won the Wolfpack Intercollegiate last week in just his third collegiate event. Jenkins won the event with an UNCG program-record score of 13-under par 203, trimming two strokes off the previous low of 205 set by Andy Bare at the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate in the 2006-07 season.
Jenkins opened the tournament with a 7-under par 65 in round one before tying the UNCG program record for 18 holes with a 9-under par 63 in round two. He closed his record-tying round with seven birdies on the back nine, including five straight to end the afternoon with an exclamation point. He recorded 19 birdies in 36 holes of play. Jenkins rounded out his two-stroke victory with a 3-over par 75 as conditions took a turn across the field. He leads the team and ranks sixth in the Southern Conference with a 71.67 stroke average through nine rounds.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) posted a seventh place showing at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate as the second Spartan in the top 10. Coalson was 2-under par 214 and opened the event with a 5-under par 67 in round one before adding a 3-under par 69 in round two. He rounded out his event with a 6-over par 78 Monday to secure his fourth top-10 finish of his career and first of the season.
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) ranks second on the team and 17th in the SoCon with a 73.22 stroke average. Dixon has tallied two top 20 performances in the first three events this season, finishing 19th at the Tarheel Intercollegiate and 13th at the VCU Shootout.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) and freshman Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) round out the Spartans’ five-member lineup in Duluth. Haithcock has a 73.76 stroke average through the first nine rounds while McGlone played in the lineup for the first time last week in Raleigh after a ninth place showing at the VCU Shootout as an individual.
Additionally, redshirt freshman Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) will play at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic as an individual.
