GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team hits the road for the first time in Southern Conference play this weekend as the Spartans travel to rival Appalachian State. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the ASU Stadium with live stats available courtesy of Appalachian State at www.uncgspartans.com.
UNCG enters Saturday’s game with a 5-5-2 overall record and an 0-0-1 mark in SoCon play. The Spartans opened league play with a scoreless draw against No. 15 ranked and preseason favorite Furman Tuesday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The Spartans out-shot the Paladins 17-16 in the tie, while redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) made two saves to secure his sixth shutout of the season. Moffitt owns a 1.26 goals against average this season.
The Spartans have scored 14 goals in 12 games this season with eight different players finding their way onto the score sheet. Junior David Reittinger (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest) leads the team and ranks eighth in the league in scoring with nine points. Reittinger has scored a team-high four goals while dishing out one assist. Senior forward Brian Graham (Bowie, Md./Bowie) is second on the team in scoring with seven points as he leads the team with three assists and has found the back of the net twice this season.
Appalachian State enters Saturday’s game with a 2-2-6 overall record and an 0-1-1 mark in Southern Conference play. The Mountaineers’ six ties are tied for the national lead in NCAA Division I men’s soccer, matching the mark of Lafayette (2-1-6). Appalachian State has picked up wins over UNC Asheville and East Tennessee State, while only dropping games at Elon and at Radford.
In fact, the Mountaineers are unbeaten at home this season with a 1-0-4 record as the ASU Stadium playing on field turf. ASU has scored 15 goals this season and has allowed 12 goals against. Stanley Broaden leads the Mountaineers in scoring with 10 points as he has scored a team-high four goals and dished out two assists. Trey Hemphill is second on the team in scoring with eight points, notching three goals and handing out two helpers. Danny Free has played every minute in goal for ASU and owns a 1.04 goals against average with two shutouts.
Saturday’s game marks the 30th meeting all-time between UNCG and Appalachian State. The Spartans hold a commanding 21-8-0 record all-time against the Mountaineers, including wins in three out of the last four meetings. The Spartans have not won in Boone since the 2005 season, dropping the last four games at Appalachian State. UNCG has not faced any team more times in program history than the Mountaineers.
Last season, the Spartans posted a 1-0 victory over the Mountaineers in Greensboro. UNCG out-shot ASU 18-8 in the victory as former Spartan Hakan Ilhan scored in the 39th minute while goalkeeper Peyton Ford made three saves in the shutout victory.
