GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG Softball team will host the 2014 Southern Conference softball tournament at the UNCG Softball Stadium for the second-straight year May 7-10, the league office announced Wednesday.
The Blue and Gold had a historic 2013 season finishing with a 38-19 record, including 19 victories at the UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans’ 38 wins was the most since the 2003 season after falling in the SoCon championship game 1-0 in 11 innings against Georgia Southern.
Entering her second season head coach Janelle Breneman welcomes seven newcomers, while only three seniors departed due to graduation. Reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year, Lindsay Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) hopes to improve upon her school-record 17 home runs last season. Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier) returns in the circle after winning the SoCon Most Outstanding Player award during her impressive SoCon tournament run of 24 scoreless innings with 20 strikeouts.
The Spartans will host the tournament at UNCG Softball Stadium for the second consecutive season and for the third time since it was built in 2006. It was also the site of the 2007 SoCon tournament.
Fans can watch the 2014 SoCon softball tournament for free on SoConTV through SoConSports.com, while the May 10 championship game will air on ESPN3 at 1 p.m.
The confirmation of the softball championship site finalizes the Southern Conference championship schedule for 2013-14.
