GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team returns to action Monday and Tuesday in Raleigh as the Spartans take part in the annual Wolfpack Intercollegiate at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The teams will tee off with an 8 a.m. shotgun start for the first of 36 holes Monday before playing the final round Tuesday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m.
Joining the Spartans in the field include Boston College, Campbell, ECU, Maryland, Jacksonville State, Temple, Arkansas-Little Rock, ETSU, NC State, Western Carolina, Idaho, Drexel, UNCW, Rutgers and Navy. The Lonnie Poole Golf Course, a home for an NCAA Regional this year, will play a par-72 course at 7,358 yards.
Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) leads the Spartans into the 54-hole tournament as he has posted back-to-back top 20 finishes this season. Dixon opened the year with a 19th place finish at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate before placing 13th at the VCU Shootout. He has a 72.50 stroke average through six rounds this season, which ranks 12th in the Southern Conference and fifth among golfers with more than three rounds in the books.
Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) holds the Spartans second-lowest stroke average this season at 73.33 and has finished in the top 30 in both events. Haithcock turned in a 21st place showing at the VCU Shootout, including a 2-under par 70 in the final round.
Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry), the reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year, placed 39th at the VCU Shootout last time out. Coalson rebounded from a tough first round score of 79 to fire consecutive rounds of 75 and 70 to move up the leaderboard in Richmond.
Rounding out the Spartans’ lineup is a pair of freshmen in Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) and Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin). Jenkins opened his collegiate career with a ninth place showing at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate and has a 73.67 stroke average this season. McGlone had the Spartans’ top finish at the VCU Shootout, placing ninth overall as he finished with a career-best 4-under par 68 in the final round.
Additionally, junior Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Road) and redshirt freshman Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) will play at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate as individuals.
