CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team scored four second half goals en route to a 5-3 road victory against the Citadel Sunday afternoon at the WLI Field.
The Spartans improved to 7-4-1, 2-0-1 on the season while the Bulldogs fall to 3-6-2, 1-3 in the SoCon after the loss. UNCG extends its 23-game unbeaten streak on the road in Southern Conference action.
The Blue and Gold finished the game with 20 shots, setting a new season high on the year. UNCG took 14 shots in the second half.
Sophomore Chesney White (Franklin, Tenn./Franklin) finished the game with two goals on four shots. Classmate Katherine Rodriguez (Franklin, Tenn./Father Ryan) picked up two assists in the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) earned the win making six saves along the way.
In the second half, the Spartans scored four goals on 14 shots in a fast paced offensive style game. At one point, each team scored two goals in a matter of five minutes from the 70th mark till the 75th.
The Spartans scored just a minute into the second half after sophomore Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) found White who put home her second goal of the game. White picked up her fifth goal of the season.
The Bulldogs cut the lead to 2-1 after Sarah Katchen scored on a rebound off the initial shot from Raedle in the 58th minute.
The Citadel tied the game in the 70th minute after Lea Raedle found Nicole Levermann who fired a shot past the keeper to make it 2-2.
A minute later, freshman Georgia Brown (Dunedin, New Zealand/St. Hilda’s Collegiate) made a run past the Citadel defense and rocketed a shot outside the box past the keeper to give UNCG a 3-2 lead.
The Spartans continued the pressure as freshman Rebecca Burrows (Auckland, New Zealand/Mount Albert Grammer School) scored the fourth goal of the game on an assist from Rodriguez.
In the 75th minute, the Citadel cut the lead to 4-3 after Ruth Leiva found a ball inside the box and scored her third goal of the season. Kim Maldonado started the play with a cross when Karina Schneider headed it to Leiva who beat the keeper.
UNCG added an insurance goal in the 84th minute after sophomore Candice Forbes (Pleasant Garden, N.C./Southeast Guilford) scored her first goal of the season to give UNCG a 5-3 lead.
In the first half, UNCG controlled the game by holding most of the possession against the Citadel. The Spartans struck first in the 36th minute after Rodriguez played a perfect ball from the midfield to a streaking White who fired a shot into the lower right corner to make it 1-0. It was White’s team leading fourth goal of the season.
UNCG almost scored in the 24th minute after White took a shot into an open goal but the Citadel defense was able to knock it off the line to keep the game scoreless.
The Bulldogs had an opportunity of their own in the 29th minute when Ana Mesa riffled a shot off the post but the ball was cleared away to keep the game tied.
The Spartans finished the half tied in shots with the Bulldogs with both teams taking six apiece.
UNCG returns home to face SoCon rival Furman Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
