GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team continues its three-game home stand Wednesday night as the Spartans host Winthrop at 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in a battle of two regionally ranked programs. The game will be video streamed online for free and live stats will be available at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans enter the game with a 4-3-0 record and are ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire South Region. UNCG is coming off a strong 2-0 victory over visiting UNCW Saturday night to get back in the win column. Senior forward Brian Graham (Bowie, Md./Bowie) and redshirt sophomore forward Dustin Gamradt (Kiel, Germany/Hebbleschule) scored two second half goals to lead the Spartans to victory over the Seahawks.
The Spartans’ defense has played a pivotal role in their success this season as all four victories have come by a shutout this year. UNCG has posted shutouts against UNC Asheville, Charlotte, James Madison and UNCW while allowing nine goals in its three losses. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Stephen Moffitt (Burlington, N.C./Williams) has played every minute in goal and has a 1.39 goals against average.
Junior forward David Reittinger (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest) leads the team in scoring with seven points as he has scored a team-high three goals while handing out one assist. Graham and senior Mahdi Ali (Helsinki, Finland/Vuosaaren Lukio) are tied for second on the team in scoring with two goals and an assist.
Winthrop enters Saturday’s game with a 5-0-1 record and is ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA Continental Tire South Atlantic Region. The Eagles have picked up wins over Georgia Southern, Wofford, Mercer, Stetson and most recently Brevard College while tying East Tennessee State.
Winthrop has scored 17 goals in six games this season while allowing six goals against. Max Hasenstab leads the team with eight points as he has scored two goals and handed out four assists. Achille Obougou has scored a team-high three goals and is one of 10 Eagles to have found the back of the net this year. Guilherme Avelar has played every minute in goal for Winthrop and has a 0.94 goals against average with two shutouts.
Wednesday’s game marks the 12th meeting all-time between UNCG and Winthrop and the first regular season meeting since 2008. The Spartans lead the all-time series by a 10-1-0 margin but Winthrop won the last meeting 3-2 in 2008 in Greensboro. Last year, the teams played an exhibition game in Rock Hill, S.C., and battled to a 1-1 tie in 90 minutes as Gamradt score the Spartans’ goal.
