GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG redshirt senior middle hitter Olivia Humphries (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) has been named this week’s Blue Chip Performer sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. This is the second year that BCBSNC has sponsored the Blue Chip Performer award, which is chosen weekly from all sports in season and runs throughout the 2013-14 UNCG Athletics season.
Humphries was named to the Spartan Spiketacular All-Tournament Team, her second all-tournament accolade of the season, after averaging 4.40 kills per set (44 total) and leading the Blue and Gold to a second-place finish. She also hit .341 during the weekend, making just 13 errors in 91 attempts.
In the championship match against Big 12 member TCU, Humphries exploded for a season-high 24 kills – just three short of her career high set last season against Furman. She set the tone for the weekend in the tournament opener versus George Mason, racking up 14 kills, nine digs and two blocks in the sweep of the Patriots. Humphries remained consistent in the three-set victory over NC Central, pounding down six kills on 11 attempts with just error for a .455 hitting mark to go along with a pair of service aces.
With her 44-kill performance during the tournament, Humphries eclipsed the 900-kill mark for her career as she sits just 93 away from reaching 1,000.
The Spartans host Triad rival High Point Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. to close a four-match homestand. The contest marks the end of non-conference play for UNCG.
