GREENSBORO, N.C. -- UNCG women’s cross country senior Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Runner of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. This is the first SoCon weekly award in Sumney’s career and the first for a UNCG women’s runner since her sister Chelsea Sumney won the honor last season after the Elon Invitational.
Sumney, who redshirted all of last season, return to action this weekend at the fifth annual Elon Invitational and showed top form winning the individual title and leading the Spartans to the team championship. She posted a time of 17:36 in the 5,000-meter race to claim the title, edging out teammate Lydia Saina by three seconds. Her time of 17:36 is the fastest time in the SoCon this season in the 5,000-meter distance.
Sumney, a First Team All-Southern Conference selection in 2010 and 2011, helped the Spartans win the team title at the Elon Invitational, edging out the hosts by one point. UNCG picked up three of the top four finishers in the race with Sumney in first, Saina in second and Chelsea Sumney in fourth place.
Sumney and the cross country program return to action Sept. 28 as they travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the Panorama Farms Invitational.
