GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG freshman men's golfer Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) won his second Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) event in three weeks as he rolled through the field at the fourth annual NC Amateur Match Play Championship at the Carolina Country Club in Raleigh. Jenkins won the Carolinas Amateur Championship in July.
Jenkins won the championship match in just one hour and 35 minutes as he won 6 and 5 over Alex Nianouris. He opened the final match in impressive fashion as he chipped in for eagle on the first hole. He continued his dominant play winning holes No. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 before halving hole No. 10. After Nianouris won his only hole of the match at No. 11, Jenkins birdied No. 12 to go back in front 6 up and clinched the match by halving hole No. 13.
"This is the second straight great summer that I have had," Jenkins told the CGA post-tournament. "I won the NC Junior and Dogwood Junior last summer and the Carolinas Amateur and the NC Match Play this summer. It's incredible. I am looking forward to college golf this fall and really excited about the possibilities for this season."
Jenkins won his first match 5 and 4 over David Germann before winning 4 and 3 in the round of 16 over Richard Fountain. He continued his strong play by winning 2 and 1 over Eric Brady before advancing to the finals with a 3 and 1 victory over Brent McKenzie.
Additionally, junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) finished second overall in the stroke play portion with a 12-under par 130 (62-68) in the 36 holes. He fell in the first round of match play 3 and 2 over George Kilgore in the round of 32.
Classmate Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) finished even in stroke play with rounds of 72 and 70 while Will Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) posted a 149 (72-77).
