GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG incoming freshmen golfer Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) won the Rex Hospital Junior Invitational and earned a spot in the Web.com Tour Rex Hospital Open this week in Raleigh as an amateur golfer with a sponsor's exemption. The Web.com PGA Tour is a developmental professional golf tour for golfers trying to earn membership in the PGA Tour.
Jenkins, who will be a freshman in the fall for the Spartans, will play the Web.com Rex Hospital Open Thursday-Sunday at the TPC Wakefield Plantation course in Raleigh. This marks the second time in his career he has qualified for the Web.com Tour as he also played in the Rex Hospital Open in 2011. In fact, a UNCG golfer has won the past four Rex Hospital Junior Invitational titles as Jenkins has two (2011 & 2013) and Grayson Murray owns a pair of titles (2010 & 2012).
Jenkins earned the sponsor's exemption Sunday as he won the Junior Invitational by nine strokes, firing a 36-hole score of 134. He opened the two-round day with an even par 71 in round one before pulling away from the field with a tournament-low 8-under par 63 in round two, winning the event by nine strokes. In his 2011 victory, he posted a 2-under par victory with back-to-back rounds of 69.
Jenkins started round one Sunday with five birdies in his first nine holes as he was 4-under par through nine. He hit a rough patch down the stretch in round one with a pair of bogeys on No. 15 and No. 16 before a double bogey on No. 17. Jenkins re-grouped in round two as he posted six birdies, 11 pars and an eagle two on the par four eighth hole.
The Web.com Rex Hospital Open runs this week June 20-23. The official website of the tournament is http://www.pgatour.com/webcom/tournaments/rex-hospital-open.html.
