2013 UNCG Volleyball Schedule (PDF)
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG volleyball team will host two tournaments at Fleming Gymnasium as part of its 2013 schedule, released in its entirety Monday by school officials. The slate features 14 home matches, including an appearance by Big 12 Conference member TCU at the Spartan Spiketacular.
The Spartans will also take on teams from 11 different leagues with matches against Wake Forest of the ACC and the SEC's Georgia Bulldogs highlighting the non-conference schedule.
"We have really toughened up our non-conference schedule this season," head coach Patrick Nicholas said. "Nonetheless, our goals remain the same – winning the SoCon regular season and tournament championships and earning the opportunity to represent the league in the NCAA Tournament."
After holding its annual Blue vs. Gold Scrimmage at Fleming Gymnasium Aug. 17 at 6 p.m., the Spartans open the campaign on the road, making a short trip to Winston-Salem Aug. 30-31 for the Deacon Invitational. UNCG will face off against future Southern Conference member and 2012 NCAA Tournament participant East Tennessee State as well as East Carolina and host Wake Forest.
The home portion of the schedule opens Sept. 6-7 with the UNCG/A&T Invitational. Murray State and Alabama State will travel to Greensboro for matches at Fleming Gymnasium as well as North Carolina A&T's Corbett Sports Center. Non-conference play continues the next weekend (Sept. 13-14) as the Blue and Gold travels south to Athens, Ga., for the Benson's Hospitality Group Invitational hosted by the University of Georgia. UNCG, Louisiana and North Florida will battle the host Bulldogs at Stegeman Coliseum.
A trio of teams will invade campus Sept. 20-21 for the Spartan Spiketacular as the Spartans welcome TCU, North Carolina Central and George Mason for the fourth annual event. After hosting its second tournament, UNCG will wrap up its non-league schedule against the Panthers of High Point University Sept. 25 at Fleming Gymnasium.
The Spartans' quest for its first-ever Southern Conference regular season title commences Sept. 27 with a road match at The Citadel while the Blue and Gold will complete the opening weekend of league play at Georgia Southern the next day.
UNCG's home SoCon schedule is comprised of matches against Elon (Oct. 2), Georgia Southern (Oct. 11), The Citadel (Oct. 12), Wofford (Oct. 25), Furman (Oct. 26), Western Carolina (Nov. 1), Appalachian State (Nov. 2) and Davidson (Nov. 15). The contests with the Paladins and Terriers serve as the "Fight Like a Spartan" matches and are also part of UNCG's 2013 Homecoming Weekend.
"The Fight Like a Spartan initiative is a great way to raise awareness about breast cancer," Nicholas stated. "It is an issue that hits close to home for myself, as well as many members of the UNCG community."
The remainder of the Spartans' league road slate includes matchups at Davidson (Oct. 5), Chattanooga (Oct. 18), Samford (Oct. 19), Furman (Nov. 8), Wofford (Nov. 9) and Elon (Nov. 13).
"We will definitely be challenged in our SoCon schedule this season," Nicholas added. "We have some tough road trips and I think any team can take the title. There should be a lot of parity in the league this year."
Scheduled for Nov. 23-25, the 2013 Southern Conference Championship will determine who receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Furman has been tabbed the host institution and all matches will take place inside Timmons Arena on the Paladins' campus.
