LEXINGTON, Va. – The UNC Greensboro trio of Caleb Webster, Austin Embler and Jacquez Koonce finished with multiple hits, highlighting a Spartan lineup that tallied 11 total hits, as the UNCG baseball team concluded the series with VMI on Sunday, May 12th with a 13-3 victory.
Webster wrapped up the day by going 3-for-4 from the plate with two RBI, resulting in one run and his fourth home run of the season. Koonce closed the game by finishing 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs, coming through with a pair of doubles and his third home run of the slate. Embler capped off the day by going 2-for-4 from the plate with three RBI, all coming by virtue of a home run in the seventh inning.
Jake Mayhew (3-0) picked up the win for the UNCG (31-16, 13-8) pitching staff, allowing five hits and one run over four innings while striking out a pair of VMI hitters. He was one of four pitchers to toe the rubber for the Spartans along with Jeremiah Triplett, Jack Voigt and Brandon Stephens, who combined to hurl three innings, allow two runs and two hits along with five strikeouts.
After assuming a 1-0 lead in the first, UNCG had its first of three multi-run frames in the second, when the Spartans put four runs across to establish a 5-0 advantage. With two runners on, Zack Budzik singled into centerfield to score Ryan Caveness for the second run of the contest. Greg Hardison doubled to bring two more across for the Spartans before a Webster single to left resulted in the fourth UNCG run of the second.
Koonce drove a two-run home run over the left field wall, scoring Windish from second, as UNCG’s lead ballooned to 7-0 through three innings. After VMI scored its first run in the fourth, Windish put a solo home run over the right-centerfield wall to push the Spartan lead to 8-1.
A sacrifice fly to right field by Madole in the top of the sixth provided the Spartans with a 9-2 lead. After a scoreless sixth by the Keydets (15-37, 9-15 SoCon), UNCG’s offense returned to the plate in the seventh and enjoyed its second four-run inning.
A pair of walks by Koonce and Hardison set the table for Embler, who lifted a 3-1 pitch over the right field wall for the 12-2 UNCG lead. Webster followed with a home run of his own, turning on the first pitch by Seth Nichols, to score the 13th and final Spartan run of the game.
UNCG completes the regular season this week with a four-game home stretch that includes a Tuesday, May 14th meeting against Winthrop (6 p.m.) that will be followed by a three-game series with Wofford that begins on Thursday, May 16th.
