GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team wrapped up its 2019 home slate with a 5-2 victory over Samford on Saturday, March 30. The win gives the Spartans three wins in their last four matches and four wins at the UNCG Tennis Courts this season.
The match victory, which came on UNCG senior Nancy Bridges’ final match at home, was by virtue of five singles wins for the Spartans, who improved to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in league action.
Trailing 1-0 entering singles play, UNCG clinched it first victory of the match when Eugenia Camacho posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Arianna Beltrame. The Bulldogs answered with a 6-2, 6-3 win by Mary Kathrine Lewis, who downed Emily Ory in the clash of No. 6’s.
Brianna Gomez got the Spartans back on track as she emerged with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Holly Horsfall, tying the match at two-all. Teammate Erika Barquero forged UNCG in front for the first time in the match, claiming a 6-4, 6-4 win against Elsa Pool.
Sophia Adams clinched the win for UNCG when she took down fellow No. 3 seed Natalia De Ugarte by a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 margin. Bridges closed out the match, recording the final point for the Spartans, as she prevailed 6-7 (4-6), 6-3, 6-3 over Grace Jennings.
Samford (10-8, 1-2 SoCon) opened the match with a doubles win by the team of De Ugarte / Beltrame, who downed the tandem of Adams / Camacho by a 6-1 margin. Barquero and Bridges knotted doubles play at 1-1 with a decisive 6-3 win over Horsfall / Pool. However, it was the tandem of Jennings / Lewis that gave Samford the first point, taking down Ory / Gomez by a 7-6 score.
UNCG returns to the courts on Wednesday, April 3 at 3 p.m. when the Spartans head to Elon for a non-conference match against the Phoenix.
