CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team won its second match in its last three outings on Thursday, March 28th, while claiming the first Southern Conference victory of the season, by downing Western Carolina 5-2 in Cullowhee.
The Spartans (6-10, 1-3 SoCon) opened the match by posting a 6-3 win in doubles action as the tandem of Nancy Bridges / Erika Barquero downed Savannah Taranto / Jordan Strickland. Western Carolina (11-6, 1-2 SoCon) retaliated as the No. 2 doubles team of Julia Pezzuco / Jacy Smith posted a 6-4 win over Brianna Gomez / Emily Ory.
Gomez avenged her earlier setback with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in singles as she downed Taranto, recording her team-best eighth singles win of the season in the process. The Spartans stretched their lead to 3-0 in the match when Bridges claimed the 7-5, 6-4 victory over Strickland.
Camacho clinched the match for the Spartans when, in No. 5 singles, she came through with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Webb. Pezzuco recorded the first Catamount point as she emerged with a 6-2, 7-6 (6-4) win over Ory in the clash of No. 6 singles.
Western Carolina snagged its second point of the match when Smith fought past Barquero, in the meeting of No. 2 singles, by scores of 6-4, 7-5. UNCG capped off the day with a win by Adams, who emerged with a pair of 7-5, 7-5 triumphs over Taranto.
The Spartans return to Greensboro to host their final home match of the season on Saturday, March 30, when they face Samford at 11 a.m. The match will serve as a Senior Day for UNCG’s Nancy Bridges.
