GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team rebounded from a tough 4-3 setback to SoCon rival Wofford on Saturday, by dominating USC Upstate 6-1 on Sunday, March 24 at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
The Spartans (5-10) grabbed the first doubles match of the day as Ollie Palmer / Nico Grewe came through with a 6-4 win over Fernando Bernardes / Ankush Arora. Teammates Roger Rogowski / Eric Whisnant followed with a 6-2 victory against Luke Eble / Samuel Schiano, securing the first Spartan point of the day.
Logan Blaser won by default in singles, while Hugh Knapp emerged with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Frederick Sydow in No. 3 singles to quickly push the UNCG lead to 3-0. Rogowski claimed his second win of the afternoon as the downed Tom Russwurm in No. 4 singles by a 7-5, 6-3 margin, clinching the match for UNCG in the process.
Cooper Wyett snagged his second singles win of the campaign as he emerged with a three-set victory over Schiano by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (6-0). Facing a 5-0 deficit in the match, Ankush Arora posted the lone win for USC Upstate (1-11) by triumphing over fellow No. 1 seed Grewe by scores of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
The Spartans closed out the match with a three-set victory by Palmer, who downed Francisco Neto by a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 margin.
UNCG begins a four-match road swing on Thursday, March 26th, when it heads to Boone, N.C., for a 2 p.m. match against Appalachian State.
