GREENSBORO, N.C. – Despite a series of singles wins by Nico Grewe, Ollie Palmer and Roger Rogowski, the UNCG men’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Wofford on Saturday, March 23rd at the UNCG Tennis Complex.
The Terriers (6-10, 3-2 SoCon) claimed the first point of the day with a pair of doubles victories. The first doubles win came when Bryce Keim / Javi Casasolas emerged 6-3 over Jack Burkill / Hugh Knapp. Wofford secured the point when Lucas Cerbelli / Diego Losada posted a 6-4 win against Roger Rogowski / Eric Whisnant in No. 3 doubles.
The UNCG (4-10, 1-3 SoCon) duo of Grewe / Palmer grabbed a hard-fought win against fellow No. 1 tandem Julian Chousa / Omar Williams by a 7-6 (15-13) margin, improving their doubles record to 9-4 in the process.
Rogowski rebounded from his doubles setback to post a 6-2, 6-1 win over Cerbelli in No. 4 singles. Losada forged the Terriers back in front as he claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win against Cooper Wyett.
The back-and-forth battle for the lead continued into the No. 2 singles, where Palmer drew the Spartans even at 2-2 in the match with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Williams. Grewe followed with a 6-4, 7-6 (6-2) victory against Chousa, in the clash of No. 1 singles, to put UNCG ahead 3-2.
However, Wofford tied the match with 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 win by Casasolas, who took down Burkill. With the match hinging on the outcome of No. 3 singles, Edu Villar overcame an opening set loss to down Hugh Knapp by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
The Spartans wrap up their homestand on Sunday, March 24, when they host USC Upstate at 1 p.m.
