GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team picked up their second win of the season on Thursday afternoon when it completed a 7-0 sweep of crosstown rival N.C. A&T at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans (2-5) halted a three-match losing skid when sophomore Brianna Gomez triumphed over Marlene Estenssoro by scores of 6-1, 6-2 in the meeting of No. 4 seeds.
UNCG grabbed the first win in doubles as the tandem of Erika Barquero / Emily Ory downed Estenssoro / Renata Ruiz by a 6-0 margin. Teammates Sophia Adams / Tayah Cross by posting a 6-2 win over Breanna Bryant / Kaya Ellis in the third-seeded doubles match. The Aggies (0-7) rebounded to claim a 6-4 win by the tandem of Fabiana Ramirez / Angelica Martinez, who downed Gomez / Nancy Bridges in No. 1 doubles.
Barquero grabbed her second win of the afternoon when she emerged with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ruiz in singles play. Redshirt sophomore Eugenia Camacho extended the UNCG lead to 3-0 following her 6-1, 6-1 win against Bryant in a meeting of No. 5 singles.
The Spartans’ lead ballooned to 5-0 in the match by virtue of a 6-1, 6-4 victory by Ory against Ellis. That was quickly followed by Adams claiming a 6-1, 6-4 win over Martinez in No. 2 singles play.
Bridges rebounded from her doubles setback to earn a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ramirez in the clash of No. 1 seeds.
The Spartans now head to Charlotte for their sixth straight match against an opponent from the Tar Heel state. The two teams will meet on Saturday, March 2nd at 1 p.m.
