KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – UNC Greensboro women’s golf currently sits in ninth place of the 2019 Kiawah Island Spring Classic, which is taking place this week at the Osprey Point and Oak Point Golf Clubs. The Spartans on Sunday collected a six-over 294. UNCG is just three strokes away from entering the top five of the 49-team field.

The second round will begin tomorrow morning and live coverage can be found on Golfstat.com.

“Excited about our first round of the spring,” said Head Coach Janell Howland. “It’s good to get a great round under our belt. The ladies have been talking about what they wanted, and they went out and got it done. I’m looking forward to doing more great work the next two days.”

The Spartans in the first round were led by junior Kendall Dobbins, who is tied for 17th place after carding an even 72 on Sunday. Dobbins recorded third birdies in the first round.

“Today we got super lucky with the weather and didn’t have to worry about the rain until the last few holes,” Dobbins said. “Osprey Point is a great golf course and I have great memories here. I was able to stick my shots in close to the pins and was confident in my game. I can’t wait for the next two rounds to see what we can do.”

Senior Lexi Kershaw, meanwhile, is tied for 36th place after she began spring play with a one-over 73. Kershaw had two birdies on the front-nine while also collecting a birdie on Hole 18.

“Today was a really good start to the spring,” Kershaw said. “I played a good round and was able to minimize mistakes. The team started off good today and I’m excited to carry it over to the next two days.”

Sophomore Sara Rydman finished the first round at two-over 74 and is currently tied for 54th place. Rydman countered a four-over eight on Hole 16 and one bogey on the front-nine with three birdies.

Sophomore Keri Kenkel completed the first 18 holes at three-over 75 and is tied for 73rd place. She also birdied three times on the day.

Sophomore Tara Bettle rounded out the action in the first round with a four-over 76. She was an even 36 on the front-nine.
