GREENVILLE, N.C. – UNCG sophomore Brianna Gomez came away with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over East Carolina’s Martina Paladini-Jennings when the two teams met in women’s tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the ECU Indoor Tennis. The win by Gomez resulted in the Spartans’ only point of the day as East Carolina emerged 6-1, improving to 6-2 on the season.
East Carolina began the match by sweeping through doubles play as it grabbed a 1-0 lead. The duo of Hsia Ho Chiao / Nastja Rettich posted a 6-1 victory over Sophia Adams / Tayah Cross in No. 3, which was followed by a 6-2 win by Lisa Hofbauer / Alisa Diercksen against UNCG (1-5) No. 1 pair Gomez / Nancy Bridges.
Celia Ruiz claimed the second East Carolina point of the match with a 6-1, 6-0 singles win over Adams in a clash of No. 2 seeds. Hofbauer earned her second win of the day by downing Bridges 6-1, 6-2.
Diercksen secured the Pirate team victory with a 6-4. 6-2 triumph over Barquero in the battle of third seeds. The Pirate lead grew to 5-0 as Rettich laid claim to a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Cross.
Gomez prevented the clean sweep by East Carolina with her victory over Paladini-Jennings as Minette Van Vreden battled past Eugenia Camacho 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-7) in the clash of No. 5 singles.
The Spartans return home from a two-game road stretch to face N.C. A&T on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
