GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team was tripped up by visiting East Tennessee State 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in the Southern Conference opener for both schools.
ETSU (5-3, 1-0 SoCon) claimed the first victory of the match when the tandem of Frazier Rengifo / Sergi Fontcuberta emerged 6-2 over Roger Rogowski / Ian Melnik. The Bucs then claimed the first point of the match as Miguel Este / Taisei Miyamoto took down Hugh Knapp / Jack Burkill by a 7-5 margin.
Fourth-seeded Yusuf Khamis extended ETSU’s lead in the match to 2-0 when he earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Rogowski. The Bucs added their third point of the afternoon by virtue of Este’s 6-1, 6-3 straight set win over Jack Burkill.
Miyamoto secured the match victory, in the battle of No. 6 seeds, with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against UNCG’s Cooper Wyett. The East Tennessee State lead grew to 5-0 after Fontcuberta emerged with a hard-fought 6-7 (0-3), 6-4, 1-0 (7-0) win over Palmer in the battle of No. 2 singles.
Lugo picked up the sixth ETSU point with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Knapp. Grewe, despite a win in the second game, was unable to hinder the Bucs from a sweep after falling to Rengifo by scores of 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
UNCG returns to the court on Sunday, Feb. 24, when the Spartans travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to take on Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m.
