CULLOWHEE, N.C. – UNCG track kicked off competition at the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday. The meet, which is the 94th rendition on the men’s side and the 32nd for the women, is hosted by Western Carolina at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Luke Sumerford and Kaitlyn Stone scored the first points for the men’s and women’s teams in the championship meet. Sumerford registered a time of 33:21.43 in the 10,000-meter for fourth-place to collect five points. Stone earned three points after placing sixth in the 10,000-meter at 39:08.05, and Holly Mordoff was ninth at 40:15.14. Ariana Garcia was named to the all-freshman team in the event with a time of 41:23.19.

Several Spartans qualified for finals in their events on Friday. Taylor Delaney qualified for the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:35.62. In the 800-meter Juan Rodriguez had the fourth-best time in the preliminaries with a personal record of 1:54.99 to reach the finals. William Sandin will race in the finals of the 1,500-meter after turning in a time of 3:58.81.

In the 100-meter Nautica Friday recorded the top-time for UNCG in the event this year with a 12.65. Alexis Rice (12.83) and Antonia Smith (12.99) also set personal-best times in the event. In the 200-meter Friday (26.53) and Smith (27.27) also set personal-records, and Rice had the top UNCG time of 26.53.

In the men’s sprinting events, Ny-Juan Williams turned in the best time of the season in the 100-meter with a 10.99, and Palmer Dupree did the same in the 200-meter with a 23.61. Daniel Rust accomplished the feat in the 400-meter (51.50).
