GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG freshman runner Geoffrey Korir (Eldoret, Kenya) earned Southern Conference All-Freshman Team accolades Friday morning as the Spartans’ hosted their first-ever SoCon Cross Country Championships at Ivey Redmond Sports Complex in Kernersville. Korir helped the Spartans finish in seventh place as a team in the 8,000-meter race.
Korir was the Spartans’ top finisher in 31st place overall with a time of 26:02.57. He posted the sixth best time among conference freshmen to earn his honors. Senior Brandon Cain (Graham, N.C./Coker College) was the Spartans’ second finisher in 34th place with a new persona-best time of 26:13.46. Cain trimmed over 30 seconds off his previous top time in the 8,000-meter distance set at the Panorama Farms Invitational last fall (26:46.80).
Sophomore Patrick O’Grady (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity) finished 41st overall with a personal-best time of 26:29.91, surpassing his previous time of 27:03.20 also set at the Panorama Farms Invitational last season. Freshman Luke Sumerford (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) was 42nd with a time of 26:30.87 while fellow classmates Bryan Whyms (Charlotte, N.C./Northside Christian Academy) posted a time of 27:01.71, Robel Tecle (Cary, N.C./Cary) a time of 27:06.11 and Brandon King (Burnsville, N.C./Mitchell) at 28:03.03.
Furman swept the awards by placing the top nine times individually to win the team title with a perfect score of 15. Tripp Hurt won the individual title with a time of 24:18.63, out-touching three other Paladins at the wire. East Tennessee State was second with 71 points followed by VMI (92), Samford (108), Chattanooga (148), Western Carolina (156), UNCG (196), Mercer (212), Wofford (234) and The Citadel (283).
