The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Pre National Invitational Saturday October 18 in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet is hosted by Indiana State and conducted at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, the home of the 2014 NCAA Championship Race.
The women’s team will compete in the 6,000-meter White Race, which will start at 12:15 p.m. and the men’s team will follow in the 8,000-meter White Race, with a 12:55 start time. The women’s pool consists of 39 teams and men’s race includes 35 total teams. The Blue and Gold will have 10 runners on the men’s side and nine will compete on the women’s side.
Leading the Spartans in 2014 thus far on the men’s side is freshman Geoffrey Korir (Eldoret, Kenya), posting his a 5,000-meter time of 15:25.30 at the Wolfpack Challenge on September 19 and a 25:27.40 5-mile time at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 3. Holding the best 8,000-meter time for the Spartans is Bryan Whyms, (Charlotte, N.C./ Northside Christian Academy) with a 27:48.50 time on September 26 at the Spartan Invitational.
On the women’s side, Eira Jensen (Alsvag, Norway/ Sortland Videregaende Skole) set a new personal best of 17:31.70 on October 3 with her 25th place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational. Katlyn Ayers (Fort Valley, Va./ Strasburg) and Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) also set new personal records in South Bend, finishing with times of 17:42.90 and 18:31.70 respectively.
On October 31, the Spartans will host the 2014 Southern Conference Championships at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, N.C.
