GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled north Friday October 3 to compete in the highly competitive Notre Dame Invitational. The 59th-annual Notre Dame Invitational is run on the nine-hole Notre Dame Golf Course and features numerous ranked teams from across the country. The Spartans place in the top 20 of the team standings in both the men's and women's races. 

In the women’s 5,000-meter race, redshirt sophomore Eira Jensen (Alsvag, Norway/ Sortland Videregaende Skole) led the Spartans with a personal best time of 17:31.70, to finish in 25th place. Junior Katlyn Ayers (Fort Valley, Va./Strasburg) also set a new personal record, finishing in 42nd place with a time of 17:42.90.

Redshirt sophomore Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) finished 121st overall and had another personal-best time for the Blue and Gold, finishing the race at 18:31.70. The Spartans finished 19th overall in the team standings with 537 points while Grand Valley State won the women's race with 56 points, besting Duquesne (123 pts). 

The UNCG men’s program ran a 5-mile race Friday with freshman Geoffrey Korir (Eldoret, Kenya) leading the way with a 63nd place finish with a time of 25:27.40. Senior Brandon Cain (Graham, N.C./Coker College) was the Spartans’ second finisher, placing 127th overall with a time of 26:22.40 while freshman Luke Sumerford (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) was 133rd with a time of 26:27.0

The men's team finished in 18th place overall with 572 total points while Grand Valley State won the team event with 71 points with North Central coming in second with 82 points. 


The Spartans return to action next Friday as they take part in the Royals Cross Country Challenge in Charlotte.
