GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country team hosts the Spartan Invitational Friday evening at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, N.C.
Teams competing against the Blue and Gold include East Tennessee State, High Point, North Carolina Central, Wofford and VMI. The men’s 8,000-meter race will start at 5 p.m. followed by the women’s 5,000-meter race at 5:45 p.m. Admission for the race is FREE!
Last week at the Wolfpack Challenge, both Spartan teams finished in fourth place. Geoffrey Korir (Eldoret, Kenya) finished 18th with a time of 15:25.30. Freshmen Robel Tecle (Cary, N.C./Cary) and Brandon King (Burnsville, N.C. / Mitchell) both improved their personal bests in their second race as Spartans, finishing 16:16.80 and 16:47.60, respectively. Fellow classmate Bryan Whyms (Charlotte, N.C./ Northside Christian Academy) also improved his personal record, notching a 40th place finish with a time of 16:08.30.
The women wrapped up the fourth place finish with a total team score of 123. Eira Jensen (Alsvag, Norway/ Sortland Videregaende Skole) led the Spartans with a 13th place finish and a time of 17:58.30, which was a new personal best for the junior.
Katlyn Ayers (Fort Valley, Va./ Strasburg) also recorded a new personal best, and was not far behind Jensen, finishing in 15th place with a time of 18:16.20 Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) finished in 21st, notching a time of 18:49.40.
The site of Friday’s race will be the home of the 2014 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships October 31.
