The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in their second meet of the season as the Spartans traveled to Cary, N.C. to take part in the Wolfpack Challenge at the WakeMed Cross Country Course.

On the men’s side, the Spartans finished fourth overall, with a team score of 113 points as Geoffrey Korir (Eldoret, Kenya) was their top finisher in 18th with a time of 15:25. 3. Today’s race was the first 5,000-meters race of his career. Luke Sumerford (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) was the third top finisher for the Spartans, wrapping up in 28th with a time of 15:53.0.

In his second race as a Spartan, freshman Robel Tecle (Cary, N.C./Cary) set a new personal best time, finishing the race at 16:16.8 for 48th place. Classmate Brandon King (Burnsville, N.C. / Mitchell) also set a personal best, with a time of 16:47.6. Junior John Elwood (Bethel, Conn. / Northern Guilford) improved his personal best as well, after finishing the race at 17:24.0.

The women finished fourth overall as well, with a total score of 123. The Spartans averaged 19:22:58 for the evening. Eira Jensen (Alsvag, Norway/ Sortland Videregaende Skole) led the Spartans with a 13th place finish and a time of 17:58.3, which is a new personal best for the junior.

Also recording a new personal best, Katlyn Ayers (Fort Valley, Va./ Strasburg) was not far behind, finishing in 15th place with a time of 18:16.2.  Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) finished in 21st, notching a time of 18:49.4.

Host NC State came away victorious on both the men and women’s side. Joanna Thompson finished the race with a time of 16:57.0 to take home the women’s individual honors.

Next up, the Spartans host the Spartan Invitational on Friday Sept. 26 at the Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, N.C. The site will be the site of the 2014 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships on October 31.

Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C. / East Lincoln) ran unattached in the 5,000-meters with a time of 15:02.8 to finish in 14th place.
