CULLOWHEE, N.C. – UNCG cross country ran in the Southern Conference Championships Saturday on Western Carolina’s campus. The men’s team placed fourth with 138 points while the women came in seventh with 180.

“It was a great step forward for the men with a really young inexperienced team,” said UNCG head coach Chad Pearson. “While we are still figuring it out as a team, it was encouraging for future cross country seasons.”

Brandon Hernandez was the top finisher for the men’s team in 19th place and earned All-SoCon Freshman Honors. Luke Sumerford placed 29th with Trelek Jones following in 33rd. Thomas Knepshield joined Hernandez as a SoCon All-Freshman when he finished 37th, and fellow freshman Dalton Miles followed placing 38th.

Kaitlyn Stone paced the Blue and Gold on the women’s side for 15th place. India Godlock finished in 35th while Kassidy Dill was 42nd place. Ariana Garcia came in 49th place, and Malea Smith rounded out the top-five with a 54th-place finish.

“It wasn’t what we wanted as a team,” said Pearson. “We didn’t pack up as well as we needed to, and it was a lesson that nothing is going to be given to us in this conference.”

UNCG will be off next weekend and return to action Friday, Nov. 9 at the NCAA Southeast Regionals in Rock Hill, S.C.
