GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Tuesday, the Southern Conference office announced the 2017 SoCon Cross Country Preseason Coaches Polls, with the UNCG women slotted sixth and the Spartan men picked to finish eighth in the league. The women’s team collected 41 total points, while the men brought home 26 votes.

The Furman men and women were each unanimous choices to claim the SoCon crown, marking the fourth consecutive year that the Paladins were picked No. 1 in both polls. Receiving all nine possible first-place votes, both Furman squads tallied 81 points.

The UNCG women finished fifth at the SoCon Championships a year ago and will be led by rising sophomore Taylor Delaney (Hope Mills, N.C./South View), who placed 11th in the conference race to earn Second Team All-SoCon and all-freshman laurels. The Spartan men garnered an eighth place finish at the SoCon Championships. Luke Sumerford (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) returns for the Blue and gold after finishing 40th at the league meet.

The Spartans begin the season Saturday, travelling to Burlington, North Carolina for the Elon University Opener.
