UNCG Athletics Places 13 Student-Athletes Into The Golden Chain Honor Society

GREESNBORO, N.C. – The UNCG athletic department placed 13 student-athletes on the UNCG Golden Chain Honor Society last weekend at a ceremony at the Virginia Dare Room in the Alumni House on campus. To be eligible, students must maintain a 3.25 GPA as a junior or senior and will be evaluated with respect to the seven qualities, which are the seven links of the Chain: leadership, scholarship, service, judgment, tolerance, magnanimity, and character.

Entering the Golden Chain Honor Society in the spring 2017 class included Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) of softball; Sarah DeSantis (Hope Mills, N.C./South View), William Sandin (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and Andrew Ramsey (Gastonia, N.C./Forestview) of cross country; Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) and Mark Johnston (Lewisville, N.C./West Forsyth) of men's golf; James Gray (Jacksonville, Fla./The Oaks School) and Connor Thompson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents) of men's tennis; Alice Taylor (Cambridge, Great Britain/UMBC) of women's tennis; Ethan Wells (Lewisville, N.C./Reagan), Hugo Coicaud (Le Havre, France/Saint-Joseph) and Eric Gunnarsson (Falkenberg, Sweden) of men's soccer; and Allison Penner (Aurora, Neb./Aurora) of volleyball.

Golden Chain is singular and unique to the UNCG campus. Golden Chain was organized to recognize students who have made significant and meaningful contributions to the University community. From the beginning, the students inducted have been those who served the University and their fellow students in quiet as well as prominent ways. The seven links of the chain symbolize the qualities, which have always been prerequisite for election to membership: leadership, scholarship, service, tolerance, judgment, magnanimity, and character.

The tradition of Golden Chain is of special importance to the University. To preserve and nurture it for today and the future is the privileged responsibility of each member of the Golden Chain Honor Society.

The name was chosen deliberately. “Golden” denotes excellence and rarity. “Chain” signifies linkage – a binding together of past generations of students who served that University and the organization with the present students, and with generations to come.
