Cross Country Heads to SoCon Championships Saturday
Chattanooga, Tenn. – The UNCG men’s and women’s cross country teams head to the Southern Conference Championships Saturday at Camp Jordan in Chattanooga, Tenn. The men’s 8,000-meter race is slated for 10 a.m. while the women’s 5,000-meter race will go off at 10:45 a.m. The awards ceremony, which recognizes the top team and individual performances, will begin following the women’s race.
On the women’s side, the Spartans look to improve upon last season’s third-place finish. With senior Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) back in the Spartans lineup and the addition of freshman Taylor Delaney (Hope Mills, N.C.) and Kaitlyn Stone (Winston-Salem, N.C./West Stokes) there is much promise for the 2016 Spartans squad. Link has one of the top-5 times amongst conference runners in the 5,000-meters this year clocking a personal best 17:43 at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, September 30.
In 2015, the men’s squad finished fifth at the Southern Conference Championship. This season, William Sandin (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) has run the fastest 8,000-meter time for the Spartans while Bryan Whyms (Charlotte, N.C./Northside Chrisitan Academy) finished just a second off his teammate’s mark at the Princeton Invitational October 15. Luke Sumerford (Greensboro, N.C/Grimsley), who has the fasted 6,000-meter time for UNCG this season, is also someone to keep an eye out for on the course Saturday.
Furman’s men’s and women’s teams are the heavy favorite entering Saturday’s races in Chattanooga. The Paladins have won the past three Southern Conference Championships each.
