UNCG Athletics Places 13 Student-Athletes Into Golden Chain Honor Society
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG athletic department placed 13 student-athletes on the UNCG Golden Chain Honor Society this weekend at a ceremony at the Virginia Dare Room in the Alumni House on campus. To be eligible, students must maintain a 3.25 GPA as a junior or senior and will be evaluated with respect to the seven qualities, which are the seven links of the Chain: leadership, scholarship, service, judgment, tolerance, magnanimity, and character.
Entering the Golden Chain Honor Society in the fall 2015 class included Katlyn Ayers (Fort Valley, Va./Strasburg), Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) and Dakarai Shipp (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) of cross country; Noah DeAngelo (Burlington, N.C./Bishop McGuiness), Evan Rees (Sydney, Ohio/Cincinnati Technical and State CC) and Logan Rohde (Cary, N.C./Greensboro College) of men’s soccer; Zoe Fishman (Woodland Hills, Calif./El Camino Real Charter) of women’s soccer; Jordy Kuiper (Groningen, Netherlands/Canaries Basketball Academy) of men’s basketball; Whitney Coleman (Cary, N.C./Cary) of women’s basketball; Warren Bryan (Greensboro, N.C./Longwood) of men's tennis; Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christina) of women’s tennis; Jessica Madsen (Slingerlands, N.Y./Daytona State) of women’s golf; and Tory Wright (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) of softball.
Golden Chain is singular and unique to the UNCG campus. Golden Chain was organized to recognize students who have made significant and meaningful contributions to the University community. From the beginning, the students inducted have been those who served the University and their fellow students in quiet as well as prominent ways. The seven links of the chain symbolize the qualities, which have always been prerequisite for election to membership: leadership, scholarship, service, tolerance, judgment, magnanimity, and character.
The tradition of Golden Chain is of special importance to the University. To preserve and nurture it for today and the future is the privileged responsibility of each member of the Golden Chain Honor Society.
The name was chosen deliberately. “Golden” denotes excellence and rarity. “Chain” signifies linkage – a binding together of past generations of students who served that University and the organization with the present students, and with generations to come.
