GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro women’s tennis standout Erika Barquero begins defense of her crown at the “El Nacional” Campeonato de Tenis de Puerto Rico on Saturday, June 8. Barquero, a native of Caguas, Puerto Rico, captured both the doubles and mixed doubles championship in Puerto Rico’s National Championship a year ago.

Barquero, capped off a 10-win freshman season by being named to the All-Freshman SoCon team and as First-Team All-SoCon doubles alongside partner Nancy Bridges. She was one of three players with 10 singles wins on the season, along with Bridges and teammate Sophia Adams. Barquero won six singles matches as the No. 3 seed for the Spartans and four as the No. 2 seed, finishing up doubles play with nine victories, eight of which came alongside Bridges as the No. 1 seed.

Barquero ended her singles campaign on a three-match winning streak, the longest streak of the slate, after posting a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Polina Goloputova (Chattanooga) on April 6. She followed that by claiming a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alejandra Morales (ETSU) in the regular season finale and was responsible for UNCG’s lone point in the SoCon Tournament clash with Samford as she took down Elsa Pool by scores of 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

In doubles action, Barquero completed the season by winning five of the last six doubles matches alongside Bridges. The first of those wins came against Jordan Strickland / Savannah Taranto (Western Carolina) by a 5-3 margin. Two days later, on March 30, Bridges and Barquero downed Holly Horsfall / Elsa Pool (Samford) with a 6-3 win before defeating Maria Paraja / Alex Koniaev (Elon) to open up April play by a 6-3 margin. The tandem of Bridges and Barquero claimed a 6-3 win over the tandem of Delaney Edwards / Emma Van Hee (Chattanooga) before ending the SoCon Tournament with a 6-2 doubles win over the pairing of Horsfall / Pool.

Barquero concluded the 2019 spring season by earning Southern Conference All-Freshman and First Team doubles selection after being paired with Bridges.
