GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team finished the 2017 Starmount Forest Fall Classic in fourth place Tuesday, marking their third-straight top-10 finish to open the season. Freshman Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) led four Spartans to top-20 finishes individually with a career-best ninth place showing at the Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro.
The Spartans as a team finished fourth in the 12-team field with a 911 score after opening the week with back-to-back rounds of 305 before posting their best round of the event with a 301 Tuesday. The finish helped the Spartans record their third-straight top-10 finish for the first time since the spring of 2012 when UNCG was in the top 10 at the Pinehurst Challenge, Bryan National and Southern Conference Championships.
Campbell took home the team title with an 869 score (291-288-290) while Marshall was runner-up at 901 (305-298-298). The Camels placed the top three finishers in the field individually with Stacey White winning the event by five strokes as the only player under par at 3-under par 213 (72-72-69).
Bettle’s ninth place finish in the field is a career-best and the lowest by any Spartan this season. It surpasses her previous top finish of 16th place set earlier this fall at the Jim West Challenge. She posted a 7-over par 223 score on the week with a 77 and 74 in day one yesterday before carding her top round of the week with an even-par 72 Tuesday. She was consistent all day long in the final round, posting two birdies, two bogeys and 14 par score. She finished the 54-hole event tied for third with 10 total birdies.
Sophomore Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) moved into 14th place in the final standings with a 1-over par 73 in her final round. Dobbins posted a 10-over par 226 score on the week after carding rounds of 77-76 Monday. She finished out the tournament with 13 pars, two birdies and an eagle-3 on the par-5 hole No. 4 Tuesday. She ranked sixth in the field with nine birdies and was one of just three players all week with an eagle. Dobbins’ 14th place finish ties her career-best showing, matching the 14th place effort at the William & Mary Invitational last fall.
Junior Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola), playing as an individual, moved up into 15th place overall at 11-over par 227 as the second-rated individual in the event. She opened with a 79-76 on day one of the event before closing out with an even-par 72 in the third round. She tallied three birdies, three bogeys and 12 par scores on the final round. The 15th place finish is the top finish of the year for Asensio and her highest since placing ninth at the SoCon Championships last spring.
Freshman Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) turned in her top finish of her young career with a 17th place showing. Kenkel recorded a 12-over par 228 on the week, posting rounds of 75-76-77. She placed sixth in the field with nine birdies and was sixth in par-3 scoring at 2-over par.
