Women's Golf Sits In Sixth Place After Round One Of Ptarmigan Ram Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team continued its strong start to the season Sunday as the Spartans posted a 5-over par 293 score to sit in sixth place overall at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic hosted by Colorado State. UNCG will begin round two Monday with tee times from 10:45-11:21 a.m. (ET) from hole No. 1. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans are just eight strokes out of the top spot held by UC Irvine at 3-under par 285. In fact, only two schools out of the 15-team field shot under par Sunday. Avery French of UC Irvine holds the individual lead at 5-under par 67, leading by two strokes over three different players.
The Spartans were strong across the lineup Sunday with four players shooting 1-over par 73 and two players shooting 2-over par 74 on the day. Sophomore Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) led the way in a tie for 16th overall at 1-over par 73. Dobbins posted two birdies, three bogeys and 13 par scores. Her 13 par scores ranks fourth overall in the field after round one.
Sophomore Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany) also posted a 1-over par 73 in round one. Tichy recorded three birdies, four bogeys and 11 par scores on the day. Junior Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) rounded out the starters in 16th place with a 1-over par 73. Asensio notched three birdies, two bogeys, one double bogey and 12 par scores.
“I hit some good shots into greens today and I was very confident in my putting, which helped me save a lot of shots,” Asensio said. “We are all really excited to see how we can do as a team tomorrow in round two.”
Freshman Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) and classmate Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) rounded out the lineup in 31st place overall at 2-over par 74. Kenkel recorded two birdies, four bogeys and 12 par scores while Bettle carded three birdies, five bogeys and 10 pars.
“I was happy with how I played today,” Kenkel said. “I had some really solid shots into the green and gave myself chances for birdies. I put myself in some good positions off the tee and had some really good up and downs. Our team is so lucky to be out here in Colorado. We are getting invaluable experiences and are showing how hard we have been working this year. I am extremely proud of this team and where we are headed.”
Freshman Sara Rydman (Taby, Sweden) also recorded a 1-over par 73 to sit in 16th place while playing as an individual. Rydman recorded a team-high four birdies, five bogeys and nine par scores.
Joining the Spartans in the 15-team field includes host Colorado State, Boise State, Northern Arizona, UC Irvine, New Mexico State, Gonzaga, Indiana, Long Beach State, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Portland State, San Francisco, San Jose State and Wyoming.
