GREENSBORO, N.C.- For the first time in program history, UNC Greensboro’s men’s golf team won it’s annual fall home tournament, the Grandover Collegiate, by 10 strokes. The Spartans (289-282-298) finished the tournament at five-over par and finished the 54-hole tournament with a total score of 869.

The victory was UNCG’s first since winning the Southern Conference Tournament this past spring. Additionally, the performance was the Spartans’ third-straight top-three finish, after finishing in third at the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate and second at the Autotrader Collegiate earlier this month.

Sophomore Nick Lyerly (68-68-77) finished the tournament in second place at three-under par, as the Salisbury, N.C., native closed out the third round at five-over 77.

Junior Jonathan Brightwell (75-70-70), meanwhile, started the day with three birdies on his first three holes before carding a total of eight birdies on the afternoon.

Senior Bryce Hendrix (75-70-77) completed his last-ever round at the Grandover Collegiate by shooting a five-over 77.

As for junior Grant Powell (72-74-77) and sophomore Zack Swanson (74-75-74), they tied for a 20th place finish to round out team play for the Spartans.

As far as individual play, the Spartans had five members of the team participating in this weekend’s event.

Sophomore Justin Emmons (77-76-77) led the way for UNCG’s individuals followed by junior Ben Buben (79-78-74), senior Mark Johnston (74-80-82), freshman Ben Crow (85-77-83) and junior Michael Wicker (86-79-84).

The tournament wrapped up fall play for the Spartans. The team will return to the golf course in early February, hosting the UNCG Banyan Creek Collegiate at Banyan Creek Golf Club in Palm City, Fla.
