GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 67th-ranked UNCG men’s golf team posted its best finish in the 11-year history of the prestigious Bridgestone Golf Collegiate as the Spartans finished tied for third overall Monday at the Grandover Resort East Course. The victory marked the Spartans fourth straight top finish of the fall and the third time they have ended in the top three this season.
The Spartans posted a 4-under par 860, their lowest three-round score this season to finish in a tie with Northwestern. UNCG opened the event with a 283 in round one and a 282 in round two Sunday before closing the week in tough conditions with a 297 Monday. No. 20 Purdue won the team championship as the Boilermakers finished an impressive 30-under par at 834. Purdue posted rounds of 277-266-291 and its second round score of 266 is a Bridgestone Golf Collegiate record. No. 18 North Carolina finished third overall at 28-under par 836 (275-272-289).
Austin Eoff of Purdue won the individual title with a 13-under par 203 score (64-67-72) while Henry Do of North Carolina was second at 11-under par 205 (65-68-72).
Senior Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) led the Spartans with his best showing of his career at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in his fourth career appearance. Coalson finished fifth overall with a 5-under par 211 as he was under par all three rounds with back-to-back rounds of 71 Sunday before closing it out with a 3-under par 69 Monday. Coalson has now finished in the top 10 for three straight tournaments this season, including back-to-back top five finishes.
Junior Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) gave the Spartans two top-10 finishers this week as he was tied for sixth overall. McGlone carded a 4-under par 212 this week with all three rounds at or under par at 71-69-72. He led all 84 golfers on the week with 41 par scores. His sixth place finish marks the third time this season he has placed in the top 10 and fourth time in the top 20.
Freshman Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) notched the best finish of his young career, placing 24th this week. Hendrix tallied a 2-over par 218 score as he opened the week with a career-low 2-under par 70 before following that up with a 71 and a 77.
Sophomore Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) placed tied for 28th overall with a 3-over par 219. He ranked fourth in the field with 37 par scores. He opened the weekend with back-to-back rounds of 1-under par 71 before closing it out with a 5-over par 77 Monday. Senior Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) added a 62nd place finish as an individual with a 12-over par 228. Haithcock also ranked fourth with 37 pars scores and posted rounds of 75-75-78.
Freshmen James Mishoe (Cary, N.C./International Connections Academy) and Mark Johnston (Lewisville, N.C./West Forsyth) along with junior Riley Davis (Kinston, N.C,/UNC Pembroke) finished tied for 67th overall at 14-over par 230. Mishoe posted rounds of 78-75-77 and tallied 37 par scores, Davis went 78-72-80 and Johnston ended the week with 81-72-77. Senior William Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) rounded out the nine Spartans in the field with a 34-over par 250 (85-76-89).
The 14-team field at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate is one of the toughest events this fall with 10 teams ranked in the top 100 by Golf Stat, including seven in the top 75. Joining No. 67 UNCG team in the field includes No. 14 Purdue, No. 16 North Carolina, No. 38 Kansas State, No. 64 Northwestern, No. 74 Iowa State, No. 75 VCU, No. 89 Chattanooga, No. 90 Georgia State, No. 95 Virginia Tech, Mercer, South Alabama, Utah and Davidson.
