Menís Golf Wraps Up Bridgestone Golf Collegiate In 9th Place
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 44th-ranked UNCG men’s golf team concluded play in the 10th annual Bridgestone Golf Collegiate on a picture perfect autumn Sunday afternoon at the Grandover Resort East Course. The Spartans as a team finished in ninth place overall while North Carolina won the team title by 12 strokes over Virginia Tech.
UNCG finished the tournament with an 889 score after opening with a 306 in round one, a 288 in round two and a 295 in the third and final round. North Carolina posted a 15-under par 849 (288-280-281), which is the sixth-lowest team scoring in Bridgestone Golf Collegiate history. Virginia Tech was second with a 3-under par 861 (286-285-290) as the only two teams under par for the weekend.
North Carolina’s Ben Griffin won the individual title with a 10-under par 206 as he responded from a first round score of 74 to post scores of 65 and 67 in rounds two and three, respectively. Griffin’s final round allowed him to overtake Virginia Tech’s Scott Vincent who finished at 9-under par 207 (66-69-72).
Sophomore Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) was the Spartans’ top finisher, placing in a tie for 12th overall. Jenkins finished the 54-hole event with a 2-over par 218 as he posted a first and third round score of 2-over par 74 while notching a 2-under par 70 in the middle round.
Sophomore Jake McGlone (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) turned in the Spartans’ top round Sunday, posting a 1-under par 71 as he carded six birdies in the round. McGlone’s final round moved him up to a 16th place finished with a 3-over over par 219 (76-72-71).
Freshman Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) recorded his best finish of his young career, placing in a tie for 17th overall as an individual. Stockwell’s 17th place finish improves on his previous top ending of 41st place set at the VCU Shootout. He posted a 4-over par 220 on the weekend as he opened with a 2-under par 70 in round one before consecutive scores of 3-over par 75 in rounds two and three.
Junior Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) added a 13-over par 229 on the weekend but finished with his best round, carding a 1-over par 73 Sunday. Seniors Alex Ehlert (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) round out the Spartans’ lineup with 13-over par 229 scores as well.
Redshirt sophomore William Thomas (Raleigh, N.C./Green Hope) added a 48th place finish as an individual. Thomas finished the three rounds with an 11-over par 227 (73-78-76). Junior Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) was the Spartans’ third individual this weekend and posted a 230 (76-77-77) score.
