Student-Athletes Achieve 100 Percent Participation in True Spartan Challenge
GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the fifth-straight year, 100 percent of all current UNCG student-athletes made a gift to their team’s enrichment fund as part of the True Spartan Challenge. UNCG is among a small number of schools across the country that have accomplished this level of dedication to its programs and Spartan student-athletes have made a bold statement about their commitment to UNCG Athletics. This feat is only one of the many goals UNCG student-athletes have reached in the classroom, on the field and in the community.
“Being a student-athlete at UNCG is a true honor. It allows for so many benefits and amazing opportunities for us to grow and learn as athletes, but more importantly as people,” Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Mackenzie Winslow said. “The True Spartan Challenge is a great initiative that gives athletes an opportunity to give back to our athletic department that has given us so much. It allows us to show how much we appreciate the department’s commitment and dedication to our success and how committed we are to upholding the ideals and values that we all hold dear. Another year at 100% participation shows how invested our athletes truly are in both giving back and being true Spartans.”
The True Spartan Challenge student-athlete giving campaign was developed as a partnership between the Spartan Club and the SAAC. Through the True Spartan Challenge, student-athletes also competed to be the first two men’s and two women’s teams to 100% participation. This year, men’s cross country/track and men’s soccer accomplished the feat on the men’s side, while cross country/track and softball earned the top two spots on the women’s side.
For its achievements, men’s and women’s cross country/track, men’s soccer and softball will receive $250 in their enrichment funds while all other teams will receive $50 for their enrichment funds. The Spartan Club is providing these enrichment fund bonuses.
Gifts made to team enrichment funds are split, with 80% going to the team's enrichment fund and 20% going to the athletic scholarship fund. Enrichment funds allow teams to use gifts as enhancements to their operating budget for special one-time needs such as equipment, facility enhancements, out-of-region travel, and other items.
