GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG athletic department held its fifth annual Big Help Day Thursday as every staff member and coach took time out of their schedules to give back to the Greensboro Community. The Spartans donated their time volunteering at five different organizations across the regions throughout the day adding to the over 1,200 cumulative volunteer hours during the 2017-18 season that UNCG student-athletes donated.
The Spartans did a variety of projects throughout the day at five different locations. UNCG sent volunteers to the Spartan Open Pantry, Lindley Elementary School, YMCA Camp Weaver, volunteered with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society/Bike MS and aided in storm recovery at the New Light Missionary Baptist Church.

Spartan Open Pantry
The Spartan Open Pantry (SOP) is a service for students who need a little help at the end of the month - and for homeless students and families who depend on the pantry for complete support. Duties centered around inventory of food included taking all the cans off the shelves, checking the dates, resorting expired food, cleaning the shelves and maintenance in their community garden.
Lindley Elementary School
Volunteers spread mulch and weeded flower/vegetable beds for the school garden as well as some basic maintenance assistance.
YMCA Camp Weaver
YMCA Camp Weaver is a resident camp facility designed to provide camp experiences for children that result in increased self-confidence to take on the challenges of life and school. Volunteer duties included minor landscaping work to prepare for the upcoming camp season
National Multiple Sclerosis Society/Bike MS
Volunteers emptied supply boxes from the previous event, replaced missing and/or removed any extra supplies from boxes, rinsed coolers from the previous event and make sure they are clean and ready to be used for the next event. Volunteers moved all the supplies from the storage facility into cargo vans and assisted with a quick cleaning of storage.
Greensboro Storm Recovery
Volunteers with the Greensboro Storm Recovery prepared bags of food and other supplies to help those affected by last weekend’s tornado.
