Spartan Madness A Smashing Success Thursday Night

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2017 Spartan Madness event Thursday night presented by Spring Place Student Apartments once again drew a standing-room capacity crowd at Fleming Gymnasium on campus as the men’s and women’s basketball teams held their first public events of the 2017-18 season. Over 2000 fans crammed into Fleming, waiting in lines for over four hours prior to get a seat for the basketball event and a performance by YFN Lucci as part of the 2017 UNCG Homecoming festivities.

The event included introductions of both the women’s basketball team and men’s basketball teams along with intra-squad scrimmages for the crowd. Both teams took part in a 3-point shooting contest that included two men’s basketball players in Marvin Smith (Richmond, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) and Garrett Collins (Asheville, N.C./Fishburne, N.C.), two women’s basketball players in Alexus Willey (Waldorf, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and DJ Howard (Orangeburg, S.C./Georgia Tech) along with two UNCG students who earned their way into the event by winning an Intramurals competition. Smith and Collins were to the two highest scorers in the first round at 16 and 13, respectively, and faced off in the finals where Collins got hot and won with 18 points.

The basketball portion of the night finished with a slam-dunk contest for the Spartans with three men’s basketball players and one UNCG student took part in the event. Freshmen Kaleb Hunter (Raleigh, N.C./Neuse Christian) got things going with a big scoring dunk on his first attempt but perfect score dunks from freshman Isaiah Miller (Covington, Ga./Newton) and junior Eric Hamilton (Atlanta, Ga./Wichita State) moved those two on to the finals.

Miller’s dunk in the first round saw him jump over head coach Wes Miller while Hamilton’s second dunk saw him jump over three UNCG pep band members. Hamilton won the event in the finals with another strong dunk to capture the crown.

At the end of the night, there was a competition between three UNCG students drawn at random out of the crowd to compete in a four-part on-court challenge with the winner getting one semester of tuition FREE. Sierra Moody was able to overcome the four obstacles to capture the free semester of tuition as the capacity crowd went crazy. The night was capped by a performance by YFN Lucci on the Fleming Gymnasium court.

The UNCG women’s basketball team opens the 2017-18 season Nov. 10 when it hosts Southern Wesleyan at Fleming Gymnasium. The men’s basketball team opens the year on the road Nov. 10 when it travels to Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia.
