GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2016 Spartan Madness event Thursday night once again drew a standing-room capacity crowd at Fleming Gymnasium on campus as the men’s and women’s basketball teams held their first public events of the 2016-17 season. Over 2500 fans crammed into Fleming, waiting in lines for over four hours prior to get a seat for the basketball event and the comedy show with Nick Cannon Presents the Wild N’ Out Tour as part of the 2016 UNCG Homecoming festivities.
The event included introductions of both the women’s basketball team and men’s basketball teams along with a combined dance featuring both teams and the Spartan G Dance Team. Both team competed in intra-squad scrimmages for the crowd.
New this year, both teams took part in a 3-point shooting contest that included two men’s basketball players in Francis Alonso (Malaga, Spain/Cushing Academy) and Demetrius Troy (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God), two women’s basketball players in Nadine Soliman (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School) and Bailey Williams (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) along with two UNCG students pulled out of the crowd. Alonso and Williams were to the two highest scorers in the first round at 11 and 10, respectively, and faced off in the finals where Alonso got hot and won with 15 points.
The basketball portion of the night finished with a slam dunk contest for the Spartans with four participating in freshman Kyrin Galloway (Milton, Ga./Milton), redshirt freshman James Dickey (Raleigh, N.C./Word of God), junior Justin Jordan (Davidson, N.C./UW-Milwaukee) and senior R.J. White (Frisco, Texas/Frisco). Both Galloway and White advanced to the finals with White taking home the crown with his final dunk that included a dunk over freshman guard Jack Konstanzer (Kill Devil Hills, N.C./First Flight).
After the basketball performance, the comedy show was held at Fleming with Nick Cannon Presents Wild N’ Out.
