RICHMOND, Va. – UNC Greensboro women’s basketball sophomore forward Aja Boyd recorded her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Spartans (6-9) fell to Richmond (3-10) 59-48 to close out the non-conference schedule.
Junior guard Nadine Soliman recorded nine points and eight rebounds, while junior forward Mangela Ngandjui added eight points and five rebounds and sophomore forward Amesha Miller added seven points.
Richmond scored seven of the first 10 points of the first quarter to take a four-point lead, 7-3, with 8:11 remaining in the opening quarter, but the Spartans scored eight of the next 10 points to take a two-point lead, 11-9, with 3:07 left. A Spider layup with 30 seconds left tied the game at 11 after the first quarter.
The Spartans scored the first four points of the second quarter to take a four-point lead, 15-11, with 8:37 remaining in the first half, but the Spiders scored 15 of the next 17 points to take a nine-point lead, 26-17, with 1:56 left. UNCG scored the final eight points to cut the lead to a point, 26-25, at the half.
A Soliman made layup to begin the third quarter gave the Spartans a point lead, 27-26, with 9:03 remaining in the quarter, but Richmond scored 16 of the next 21 points to take a 10-point lead, 42-32, with 22 seconds left. A Spartan field goal with two seconds left cut the lead to eight points, 42-34, after the third quarter.
The Spartans started the final quarter scoring the first six points to cut the lead to two points, 42-40, with 7:53 remaining, but the Spiders scored 17 of the final 25 points for the 11-point win.
The Spartans are back in action next week with the Southern Conference opener against Furman Thursday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. and finishes the three-game road trip with Wofford Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.
