Ajemba and Soliman Earn Second Team All-SoCon Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference has released is annual postseason awards Tuesday afternoon. UNCG finished the 2017-18 regular season Saturday afternoon, posting a 12-17 record and a 6-8 mark in SoCon play. UNCG will take on the Chattanooga Mocs at 5:45 in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina.

Senior Ije Ajemba (Lanham, Md./Old Dominion) and sophomore Nadine Soliman (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School) earned Second Team All-Southern Conference honors for their performances this season. This is the second time Soliman has earned second team honors and the first for Ajemba.

Soliman led the Spartans with a 14.0 points per game average and scored 14.7 points per game in league play. She shot 42 percent from the field and 31 percent from 3-point range during the season. In league play, her 3-point shooting percentage jumped to 43 percent. She grabbed 4.1 rebounds per game and dished out 1.4 assists per contest.

Ajemba averaged a double-double throughout the season as she set school records for double-doubles in a season, Division I era school-records for offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds and total rebounds. She’s currently third all-time in total rebounds (357), trailing Renee Coltrane’s single season records set in 1982-83 (367) and 1983-84 (379). She set and broke her own Division I era school-records by grabbing 21 and 22 rebounds in games against Wofford.

Kahlia Lawrence of Mercer was named the SoCon’s Player of the Year by the media and the league’s coaches. Erica Haynes-Overton of ETSU was named the Defensive Player of the Year and Mercer’s Susie Gardner was named Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to a 27-2 overall record and a perfect 14-0 SoCon mark. The Bears enter the tournament with the nation’s third-longest winning streak, having won 24-consecutive games.
