Ajemba Garners Her Third SoCon Player of the Week Award
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior center Ije Ajemba (Lanham, Md./Old Dominion) adds to her collection of Southern Conference Player of the Week awards, earning her third of the season after her performance last weekend. She averaged a double-double in two games last week, and broke her own school-record by grabbing 22 rebounds against Wofford on Saturday.
Saturday’s performance was her 13th double-double, adding to her school-record for double-doubles in a season. The week got off to a slow start for Ajemba, as she scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds in 31 minutes in the narrow loss at Furman Thursday.
She bounced back Saturday against Wofford as she continued her dominance on the boards. Her 22 rebounds is the most in a Division I game at UNCG and ranks third all-time behind totals set by Renee Coltrane in 1985 and Sandra Lemon in 1979. Ajemba broke her own Division I era single game rebounding record that she had previously set against these same Terriers.
With her performance last weekend, Ajemba now holds the Division I era single season school-records in total rebounds (326), defensive rebounds (218) and needs just four more offensive rebounds to set the Division I era record for offensive boards. Ajemba needs 53 more rebounds to set the all-time single season-record set by Renee Coltrane during the 1983-84 season.
Offensively, Ajemba shot 50-percent from the floor in the two games, including a 19-point effort in the overtime victory over Wofford. She hit eight free throws in the two games and dished out a pair of assists.
The Spartans are back in action this Thursday as they host the Samford Bulldogs at 7 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium.
